Once you’ve decided which course is right for you, you’ll need to begin the application process. For our high demand courses we encourage you to complete your application as soon as possible, as applications are processed in order of submission.

For short courses and skill sets, the application process will only take a few minutes. Note: You may need to pay fees when you apply.

For other courses, you may need to provide documentation or evidence that you can meet the entry requirements. These might be results from a past qualification, a police check, Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) registration, or proof you hold a specific licence.

When you apply for a course, you may also be asked to:

provide evidence that you meet the educational requirements of the course (i.e. provide a copy of your previous qualification, proof of your work skills, or language literacy and numeracy ability)
support your claim for recognition (i.e. provide certified copies of your previous qualifications and/or other evidence)
support your claim for a fee concession by providing relevant documentation (i.e. a Health Care Card).

Getting ready to Apply to Study at TasTAFE

To help you get ready for when applications open it is important that you have a TasTAFE Student Portal account ready to go. When applications open and you click on the Apply Now button against your chosen course it will take you directly to the Student Portal login screen.

If you HAVE studied or applied with TasTAFE before:

Log in to the Student Portal using the personal email address you provided us with when you last studied or applied. If you are unsure of the correct email address, please ask us to check for you. If you no longer have access to that email address, we can update it to your current email address. We will need to verify your identity before doing this.
If you have forgotten your password click on Forgot your password? A password reset link will be emailed to you. Please note the link expires after 30 minutes. If you don’t have access to your emails at the time we can assist.
Once you have successfully logged in, make sure all your details are up to date – click on Your Personal Details.
If the course you are intending to apply for has entry requirements, and you already have copies of the evidence you can upload these in readiness – click on Your Uploads. This includes any other supporting documents such as Concession Card, Visa evidence, Credit Transfer evidence, etc.
Make sure you keep your login details handy. You will now be ready to go when applications open.

If you HAVE NOT studied or applied with TasTAFE before:

You will need to create a Student Portal account. Before doing this you will need to have your Unique Student Identifier (USI) number ready.

If you don’t have a USI, don’t know what the number is, or need to update your details visit the USI website. Here you can create a USI, check to see if you have a USI and find out what it is, or update your details if you have changed your name since creating it. Please complete this process before creating your Student Portal account.
Navigate to the Student Portal Login Page and click on Create an Account and create an account using your personal email address.
Please do not use a TasTAFE student email address to create an account.
Complete the details on the Creating a TasTAFE Student Portal Account page and click on Register at the bottom of the screen. You will not be able to do this until all required* fields have been completed, including your USI. Please note your USI needs to be valid and your details need to match those you originally created your USI number with.
Once you register you will then need to complete Your Personal Details.
If the course you are intending to apply for has entry requirements, and you already have copies of the evidence you can upload these in readiness – click on Your Uploads. This includes any other supporting documents such as Concession Card, Visa evidence, Credit Transfer evidence, etc.
Make sure you keep your login details handy. You will now be ready to go when applications open.

How do I apply?

You can apply for a course in person, by phone or online.

If you are completing your enrolment by phone, please ensure you are informed of the Privacy Notice and Student Declaration and Consent. You will be asked to agree and consent before confirming your enrolment.

How to submit an online application at TasTAFE

Find your chosen course on the TasTAFE website and click
Apply Now.
If there is no Apply Now button on the course information page, the course is currently not taking applications. Submit an enquiry to receive information on when applications will be open.
You will be taken to the Student Portal login page. Log in with your personal email address, read the instructions and then click CONTINUE APPLICATION at the bottom of the page.
Follow the prompts and CONTINUE through each page.
When you reach the evidence required page, please read the information at the top about what you may need to upload, full details are available on the course information page on the TasTAFE website. Note: If you do not have the evidence required available to upload at the time of applying, please continue to submit your application. You can provide this evidence later, and you will be requested to do so before your application can be progressed.
Select your evidence type and upload documents by clicking Choose Files. Click UPLOAD.
Read the Privacy Notice and Declaration and Consent information and then click the I Agree tick box at the bottom of the page.
Review the information you have entered and edit if required
Click on SUBMIT APPLICATION
You will receive communication from the Admissions team via email on the progress of your application, or if there is anything further we need from you. Please check your emails regularly. What happens if I can't complete my application online? How many courses can I apply for?

We recommend submitting an application for no more than 3 courses at any time. If you are unsure of which course is right for you, please call us to discuss on 1300 655 307.

If you do decide to submit an application for more than one course, please make sure you identify your course preferences. You can do this within the Student Portal | My Applications after submitting your last application. Please Note: Once an offer has been made, your other applications may be closed.

If you would like to advise of changes to your course preferences, or cancel an application, please email apply@tafe.tas.edu.au.

I’m under 16 years of age can I enrol at TasTAFE?

In Tasmania, all young people must participate in education or training until they complete Year 12, attain a Certificate III, or turn 18 years of age, whichever occurs first.

To enrol at TasTAFE, you need to be at least 16 years old. There are some exceptions including apprentices and trainees and students who gain approval from TasTAFE and their College or school to study a Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification. It’s best to talk to your school careers advisor first or call us on 1300 655 307 to talk about your options.

Obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI)

If you don’t already have one, you’ll need to create a Unique Student Identifier (USI). A USI is a unique number allocated once to everyone who undertakes accredited training in Australia. You must provide your USI or you won’t be able to complete your application.

Creating a USI is easy and takes only a few minutes. You will need to have a valid USI before you can create a TasTAFE Student Portal account.

If your name has changed since creating your USI, you’ll need to update your details with us and on the USI website.

You can also give TasTAFE permission to view your full VET transcript via the USI website if you wish to claim credit transfers.

Recognition of prior learning and skills

At TasTAFE we believe that the things you already know how to do should be formally recognised. Whether it be a hobby, the work you currently do, a volunteer role, or even a family or sporting club commitment, over the course of your life you’ll have gathered a wide range of skills, knowledge and experiences.

When you apply for a course at TasTAFE you can ask to receive recognition of prior learning and skills that are relevant to the course you are applying for. These may include skills gained through schooling, formal/informal learning, life experience/s and/or employment and work experience. You may also be able to apply for credit transfer for units that you have successfully completed previously or with another training organisation.

You will need to show evidence for prior learning and for any units you have previously completed, so you can claim relevant credit transfers.

Please note: Recognition is awarded for a whole unit of competency only. Partial recognition will not be awarded. It is also possible to apply for credit for TasTAFE subjects if you decide to study at university.

What happens next?

Once you’ve submitted your application, you will get a confirmation email to say your application has been received. Check your email regularly or log in to your TasTAFE Student Portal account to check progress.

You may need to provide extra information or documents to progress your application. Checking your emails regularly will allow us to progress things in a timely manner.

Course places are filled in order of applications received. If you don’t respond to requests for more information or provide evidence within the requested timeframes, your application may be closed, and you may be required to apply again in the following intake.

If your application is successful, you will be notified via email or via the TasTAFE Student Portal. To accept your offer, simply respond to the email.

If your application is unsuccessful, we will contact you via email. If you don’t gain entry into your preferred course, you may have the option to enrol in another course at a later time or at a different location. If the course is full, you will be placed on a waiting list, and as soon as a place becomes available, we will send you a new offer via email.

If you’re not successful, we can also help you choose another course that will help you meet your educational and career goals. Our Student Support staff will be happy to offer you course advice and help you through this process.
