TasTAFE’s three hairdressing simulated salons are run from the Alanvale, Devonport and Campbell Street campuses.
The training salons are fitted out with professional quality salon chairs and washing stations and offer you the chance to learn practical skills in hairdressing as well as customer service and workplace safety procedures in a modern and contemporary salon environment.
If you choose to undertake a course in Hairdressing you’ll learn how to prepare clients for salon services, communicate with clients, shampoo and dry hair to shape, apply colour and develop hairdressing industry knowledge.
Higher level courses will give you the opportunity to learn how to consult with clients, sell products and services and design and apply a broad range of technical hairdressing services such as designing and cutting, colouring, straightening and perming in a safe working environment whilst performing a full range of client services.
If you are interested in undertaking training in beauty qualification, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your skills in our beauty therapy training rooms at Alanvale, Devonport and Campbell Street campuses.
Depending on your chosen qualification, you’ll learn to provide beauty treatments to your clients including waxing treatments, , advanced facials, specialised make-up, lash and brow/tinting services and nail enhancements. You’ll also gain the knowledge and skills you need to develop personalised interactions between yourself and your client/s as well as how to put together treatment plans and provide advice and sell retail skincare and cosmetic products.
We have simulated Beauty Salons, treatment tables and specialist makeup rooms, you’ll learn how to use all the tools, equipment and products you’ll find in the workplace.
Nail programs are delivered at Alanvale, and Campbell Street campuses.
Enhance your career with new skills in nail technology or take your existing proficiency to the next level. This includes client consultation on nail care products and services.
Among other skills, you will learn to undertake manicures and pedicures, Identify nail and skin disorders, nail art and apply acrylic and gel enhancements which could help you gain employment as a nail technician. Nail services are a growing industry. Nail technicians can work in full-service beauty salons or specialised nail salons. After completing the nail technology course, you will have the skills and training to be able to apply for jobs in a salon, beauty clinic or health resort or run your own small business.
Hair and Beauty Apprenticeships and Traineeships
Apprenticeships and traineeships in Hair and Beauty area are available for anyone of working age. You don’t have to be a school leaver – you just have to be employed, or about to be employed in either Hairdressing, Barber, Nails or Beauty Salon.
The benefits of undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship include being able to:
- earn while you learn
- graduate with a nationally recognised qualification
- undertake training on-the-job at your workplace, off-the job at TasTAFE
- develop new and existing skills under the guidance of your employer and TasTAFE’s teachers.
The length of training will vary according to the qualification and any prior experience and training you may have. Traineeships typically take between one and two years, while apprenticeships are usually three or four years.
Apprenticeships and traineeships can be done on either a full-time or part-time basis. You can also be involved in a School-based Apprenticeship, where you spend part of your time at school and the rest on-the-job.
