Fee-Free TAFE is back in 2024

Fee-Free TAFE and vocational education is a joint initiative of the Australian and Tasmanian Governments providing tuition-free* training places to people wanting to train, retrain or upskill.

*Your tuition fees are covered; however you may need to cover costs such as textbooks, workbooks, uniform, online learning resources or personal protective clothing. Depending on your course, there may also be other expenses that you need to budget for.

Any additional fees will be identified in course specific information.

Fee-free TAFE is a joint initiative of the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, providing tuition-free* training places to students wanting to train, retrain or upskill.

The following Tasmanian residents are eligible for Tasmanian Government subsidised training:

• Australian citizens
• Permanent residents

And Tasmanian residents who have permission for work and study in Australia and:

• Are New Zealand citizens with a Special Category Visa
• Are holders of a temporary humanitarian visas
• Are Tasmanian State Sponsored skill migrant visa holders
• Are a dependent (aged over 18) or partner (spouse) visa holder of an eligible applicant.

All other visa holders are ineligible for subsidised training. This includes all bridging visa holders and Tasmanian State Sponsored business visa holders.

Applicants must also meet any specific entry requirements for individual courses.

First Nations Australians, young people (17-24), people out of work or receiving income support, unpaid carers, women facing economic insecurity, women undertaking study in non-traditional fields and people with a disability are encouraged to apply.

Note: People studying within the education system (up to Year 12), or undertaking a traineeship or apprenticeship are not eligible.

The number of Fee-Free places on offer at TasTAFE are determined by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments.

If you have already applied for a course commencing in 2024, we will provide you with an update when the Fee Free TAFE course list is finalised.

Eligible people can undertake training in more than one Fee-Free TAFE course, however, to give you the best chance of success, please check that the days your courses run do not overlap, and you can commit the time required to manage an increased study load.

If you are offered a Fee-Free place in a Fee-Free identified course, your tuition fees will be waived for the entire course.

Fee-Free places are for people enrolling in and commencing a new course in 2024.

Whether you’re at the very start of your training, returning to study after a long break, or looking to upskill, we’re here to set you up for success. We value and appreciate the rich diversity of our students and recognise sometimes you might need some extra help to achieve your study or career goals. Students undertaking a Fee-Free course can access counselling, career planning through to learning and study support.

To apply for a Fee-Free listed course, you will need to go through the normal application process.

To apply for a course:

• go to the course page you are interested in
• click on the Apply button and apply from the course page (If you don’t have a TasTAFE student account with us, you’ll be asked to create an account as part of the application process).

Fee-Free places are subject to availability at each intake and may be subject to capacity constraints.

Course offers are made based upon the date of application, and all other course entry requirements being met.

If you have an outstanding debt with TasTAFE, you will need to have an approved payment plan set up before you can be offered a Fee-Free place in a course.
