Great news, this course is included in Fee Free TAFE* for courses commencing in 2026.

To be eligible for a Fee Free place you must be:

a resident of Tasmania or working in Tasmania
an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident, an eligible VISA holder, and
of working age

Calling all construction workers…! Complete your compulsory White Card training today, so that you can safely undertake construction activities on a worksite.

The National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work requires that all construction workers undertaking activities on Australian worksites complete White Card training prior to undertaking construction work, in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others.

This one-day short course covers a broad range of topics including WHS, emergency procedures, risk management and construction hazards, and will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to adhere to workplace health and safety obligations, meet legislative requirements, and perform emergency procedures including evacuations and first aid response requirements.

Our experienced teaching team will also guide you in understanding basic risk control measures, and how to identify and report common building and construction hazards, as well as learning about WHS hierarchy of controls and how to correctly select and fit Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

On successful completion of this short course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units completed, and you will also be eligible to lodge an application for a White Card through Service Tasmania.

Note– a White Card does not have an expiration date and does not require a refresher course.

Fee Free TAFE eligibility

Fee free TAFE is a joint initiative of the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, providing tuition-free* training places to students wanting to train, retrain or upskill.

The following Tasmanian residents are eligible for Tasmanian Government subsidised training:

Australian citizens
Permanent residents

And Tasmanian residents who have permission for work and study in Australia and:

Are New Zealand citizens with a Special Category Visa
Are holders of a temporary humanitarian visas
Are Tasmanian State Sponsored skill migrant visa holders
Are a dependent (aged over 18) or partner (spouse) visa holder of an eligible applicant.

All other visa holders are ineligible for subsidised training. This includes all bridging visa holders and Tasmanian State Sponsored business visa holders.

Applicants must also meet any specific entry requirements for individual courses.

First Nations Australians, young people (17-24), people out of work or receiving income support, unpaid carers, women facing economic insecurity, women undertaking study in non-traditional fields and people with a disability are encouraged to apply.

Note: People studying within the education system (up to Year 12), or undertaking a traineeship or apprenticeship are not eligible.

*Your tuition fees are covered; however you may need to cover costs such as textbooks, workbooks, uniform, online learning resources or personal protective clothing. Depending on your course, there may also be other expenses that you need to budget for.

Entry

There are no essential entry requirements for this course.

Fees, payments and other costs

Your tuition fees cover the basic materials needed for your course, but may not cover items such as text books, workbooks, uniform, online learning resources or personal protective clothing. Depending on your course, there may also be other expenses that you need to budget for.

For courses undertaken in 12 months or less, you will be invoiced the full course fee (including any other essential fees associated with your course).

*For courses studied over multiple years, your course and other fees will be split over the years of study, with the concession fee being charged on a yearly basis. At the time of enrolment you will be invoiced for the first year’s fees. An invoice will be raised in each subsequent year around the same time as your ‘enrolment anniversary’.

Recognition of prior learning and skills

It makes sense that you should be recognised for the things you already know how to do.

TasTAFE can assess your skills and knowledge based on your previous education, work history or life experience – which may help you to gain your qualification a whole lot faster!

Assessment methods

Assessments are designed to help you demonstrate the skills and knowledge you learn in your course and are an essential part of your training. Assessments allow us to confirm that you can perform tasks to the standard required in the workplace, and that you can meet all of the requirements of your course.

While studying at TasTAFE, you may be assessed in a number of different ways. Some common assessment methods include:

completing workplace documents
observations on the job and/or in a simulated assessment environment
quizzes/multiple choice tests
research projects
tests – written or practical
verbal questioning
work samples
written assignments or short answers.

What you will need

There are different requirements depending on the course you are enrolled in.

Although not required, it is recommended that you have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection. Upon enrolment TasTAFE supply students a Microsoft Office license for the purpose of completing your study; including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Defender (Internet Security). TasTAFE has computers available for student use during normal business hours, at all major campuses.

For classes, please be prepared with standard items such as pens, notebook or paper, USB.

You may also need to bring specific equipment, tools or personal protective equipment, your teacher will let you know.

Licensing and other requirements

The actual White Card is obtained from Service Tasmania with the presentation of the relevant paperwork which will be provided with your Statement of Attainment.

For a Construction Induction card replacement, fill in an Construction Induction Card Replacement Application Form (available from the WorkSafe website ) and take into Service Tasmania.

The cost of a replacement is $11.90 (effective 1 July 2022).

Outcome and units

On successful completion of this course you will receive a Statement of Attainment for successfully completed units.
