TasTAFE Certificate IV in Community Services leaners from Devonport Campus recently completed a community project titled Kindness in Every Thread.
The project aimed to raise awareness of homelessness in northwest Tasmania, and to collect donations of good-quality clothing, personal and baby-care items to help people maintain their dignity in challenging times.
The learners hosted a community BBQ at the Devonport Bluff recently which acted as a collection point for donations, and to provide a sausage sizzle for the community.
The generosity of the local community in the northwest was overwhelming. Local businesses donated bread and sausages for the BBQ, along with items such as nappies, baby wipes, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, cosmetics and many other items – estimated to be worth several thousand dollars.
The learners proved once again that a simple idea can develop into something meaningful, increasing their skills and knowledge in event and project planning.
The donations have already found their way to Youth Family and Community Connections (including Transitional Accommodation Services), Safe Space Burnie, Salvation Army and City Mission – an outcome that demonstrates that hard work and dedication to a worthy cause can bring rewards far beyond learning.
TasTAFE Community Services Teachers Wendy Cunningham and Rod Williams wholeheartedly congratulated the learners on their efforts with the project, the final unit in their Certificate IV in Community Services studies.
