Support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

The Aboriginal Training Programs (ATP) team provides support, advice and assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students (including apprentices and trainees) who wish to enrol, or are already enrolled, at TasTAFE.

ATP staff are available in all three regions and are located at the four main campuses; Bathurst Street (Hobart), Alanvale (Launceston), Burnie and Devonport.

Assistance can include:

  • improving reading and writing skills
  • helping students to overcome barriers to successful learning
  • mainstream course information and enrolment
  • arranging tutorial/study support
  • negotiating training for Aboriginal groups, organisations and individuals
  • assisting students in determining career/study pathways
  • referrals regarding financial assistance, accommodation, Centrelink, transport, etc.
  • fee/material assistance for mainstream students
  • help with resumes and employment applications
  • providing information on Aboriginal community events, organisations, services, contacts, etc.
  • promotion of Aboriginal culture and events on campus, e.g. NAIDOC Week, Close the Gap Day
  • general student support, advice and/or assistance.

Financial assistance

ATP is an agent for NILS (No Interest Loan Scheme), which is available for all students studying at TasTAFE.  NILS loans are available for people over the age of 18, who have a current Healthcare or Pension Card and have lived at the same address for more than 6 months.

We can assist you in your application for a loan from $300 to $1,200 to buy new items and services, including:

  • household essentials like fridges, washers and some furniture
  • education essentials like computers, school trips and text books
  • medical and dental equipment and services
  • car care essentials like registration, tyres and repairs.

There are no credit checks, interest, fees or penalties.

Through Student Services we can also provide you with information about additional services and facilities such as student residences and child care services affiliated with TasTAFE.
