Get the skills you need to become a manager or supervisor within the tourism industry, or effectively operate your own travel or tourism business.

This course will provide you with an advanced understanding of how the tourism industry operates, including business operations and regulations, culturally suitable and sustainable practices and efficient planning techniques.

In this course, you will learn how to research and comply with regulatory requirements, source and use information on the Tourism and Travel industry, develop a range of tourism products and write complex documents, as well as develop and implement marketing strategies and manage diversity in the workplace.

Throughout the course, you will also learn how to develop and implement a business plan, develop and manage quality customer service practices and enhance customer service experiences, as well as establish and conduct business relationships, lead and manage people and monitor work operations.

In this course, you will also learn how to manage risk, interpret financial information and manage finances within a budget – including the preparation and monitoring of budgets – and how to establish and maintain a work health and safety system.

The program will be delivered in tandem with the SIT60316 – Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management program. On successful completion of this course, you will be equipped to work in any sector of the tourism industry as a senior manager, general manager or owner-operator of any style of tourism business. You may also like continue on to undertake further study at university level, as the University of Tasmania offers articulation pathways for TasTAFE students completing this qualification. This means that you will be able to receive credit towards the Bachelor of Tourism or Bachelor of Business Administration (Tourism Management) degrees.

Note– students who complete SIT60116 – Advanced Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management at Drysdale may study in the Accelerated Study Mode in Launceston, which will enable students to complete three semesters of study in one calendar year, with the first intake of students into the Bachelor of Business Administration program occurring in February of 2021. A selection process, including interview, will take place prior to the enrolment of the program. Please contact us to find out more

This course is aimed at those who have completed SIT30116 Certificate III in Tourism.

Academic requirements

To meet academic requirements for Diploma or Advanced Diploma courses, you need to successfully complete any TasTAFE course entry procedures and you also need to:

Have completed year 12 and provide TasTAFE with a copy of your Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education awarded to you by an agency or authority of a State or Territory; OR,

Provide TasTAFE with a copy of a qualification at Level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework that was awarded to you. This qualification must have been delivered in English; OR,

Complete an approved language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment and display competence at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in both literacy and numeracy.

Fees, payments and other costs

Your tuition fees cover the basic materials needed for your course, but may not cover items such as text books, workbooks, uniform, online learning resources or personal protective clothing. Depending on your course, there may also be other expenses that you need to budget for.

For courses undertaken in 12 months or less, you will be invoiced the full course fee (including any other essential fees associated with your course).

*For courses studied over multiple years, your course and other fees will be split over the years of study, with the concession fee being charged on a yearly basis. At the time of enrolment you will be invoiced for the first year’s fees. An invoice will be raised in each subsequent year around the same time as your ‘enrolment anniversary’.

TasTAFE can assess your skills and knowledge based on your previous education, work history or life experience – which may help you to gain your qualification a whole lot faster!

Assessment methods

Assessments are designed to help you demonstrate the skills and knowledge you learn in your course and are an essential part of your training. Assessments allow us to confirm that you can perform tasks to the standard required in the workplace, and that you can meet all of the requirements of your course.

While studying at TasTAFE, you may be assessed in a number of different ways. Some common assessment methods include:

completing workplace documents
observations on the job and/or in a simulated assessment environment
quizzes/multiple choice tests
research projects
tests – written or practical
verbal questioning
work samples
written assignments or short answers.

What you will need

There are different requirements depending on the course you are enrolled in.

Generally, it is recommended that you have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection and up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. TasTAFE has computers available for student use during normal business hours, at all major campuses.

For classes, please be prepared with standard items such as: pens, notebook or paper, USB.

You may also need to bring specific equipment, tools or personal protective equipment, your teacher will let you know.
