Adult literacy is becoming more noticeable in the media and maybe in your life as well. What is it about? How can you help?

This course is available to anyone in Australia.

Understanding Adult Tutoring is an online, non-accredited course that gives you a starting point. In about 20 hours of learning you will explore:

  • Adult learning and growth mindset
  • What is literacy?
  • Barriers and why
  • Reading and spelling
  • Numeracy, maths anxiety and maths literacy
  • Digital literacy and assistive technology
  • Learner-centred practices and planning

This is an independent course of study. You work through readings, videos, quizzes and learning activities at your own pace. You will have 90 days to complete the course. A workbook guides and supports your ideas, questions and “aha” moments as they arise.

At the end of the course, you will receive a TasTAFE Statement which recognises your learning.

To do well in this course, you will need to have sound digital literacy skills to work independently as well as language, literacy, numeracy and learning skills to a minimum of Australian Core Skills Framework Level 3.

When you finish this course, you may like to enrol in our nationally accredited skill set, Tutor Adult Literacy Learners (CHCSS00101 Language, Literacy and Numeracy Tutor Skill Set). See the TasTAFE website for details.
