Information we collect and why

We want to make sure you get the best possible service. To do that, we will be asking you questions to get to know you.

What you share with us will help us to provide high quality services and support.

You can choose not to share information; however, this may affect the service Student Support is able to provide.

Support is free and confidential.

Personal Information is managed in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act 2004, and the TasTAFE Personal Information Protection Policy.

Student Support will ensure that your personal information is not shared with anyone outside of TasTAFE, without your consent, unless legally and/or ethically required.

This would apply, in the following situations:

  • if your life is in danger, or you are at serious risk of harm;
  • if someone else’s life is in danger, or they are at serious risk of harm and/or
  • if we are required, by law, to disclose information. For example, protecting a child or young person from serious harm or responding to a court subpoena for copies of relevant records.

It is also useful to know:

  • Your personal information is stored securely on our computer system.
  • Sometimes people feel like it would be useful for us to be able to communicate with their support people, for example doctors, teachers, and psychologists. If you think this would be useful, we have a consent form that you can sign.
  • Information you share helps us provide services such as: course advice; personal counselling; advocacy and accessing supports on your behalf. Only Student Support staff can access detailed notes about this information.
  • Our staff will not share any of your sensitive personal information without your consent.
  • For some Aboriginal and International students, we are required, at times, to provide your personal information, such as name, address, and date of birth, to a third-party organisation. This is only done when it relates to your studies and with your consent.
  • Data from student records is used to review and improve our service. This data never includes identifying information.

You have the right to access the information kept, in relation to you, at any time.
