Employ an Apprentice in 6 Steps

Follow a structured journey at your own pace.

Think about your business needs and why you're looking for an apprentice or trainee. Then work out:

  • What skills you need.
  • What the job will involve.
  • Whether you want a full-time or part-time apprentice or trainee.
  • What apprenticeship field aligns with your workplace skill set.
  • What field the apprenticeship or traineeship will be in. {link to list of TasTAFE qualifications}

There are several ways you can look for the right person:

  • Recruit someone you know or who has been recommended to you.
  • Advertise the position in a local paper or online.
  • Get in touch with local employment agencies.
  • Contact your local Group Training Organisation (GTO). A GTO is an organisation that employs apprentices and trainees and places them with a host business for their employment and training.

To learn more about finding an apprentice or trainee or to discuss group training options, talk to your local Apprentice Connect Australia Provider. Apprentice Connect Australia Providers make it easier for employers to recruit, train and retain apprentices by providing personalised advice and support services throughout the life of the apprenticeship.

Once you have found the right person for your business, it is now time to agree on a qualification that will meet the apprentice’s or trainee's career goals and be suitable for your workplace.

Before an Australian apprenticeship can start, you will need to sign into a training contract. This process includes yourself as the employer, the apprentice/trainee as your employee and your Apprentice Connect Australia Provider who administers and manages the entire process.

A training contract is a legal agreement between an employer and an apprentice or trainee that outlines:

  • The number of hours of employment per week that the apprentice or trainee will be employed. This includes on-the-job and off-the-job training time.
  • The length of the training contract (known as the nominal term or duration)
  • The qualification the apprentice or trainee is undertaking.
  • Details of the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) which will provide training and assessment services.
  • The industrial arrangements under which the apprentice or trainee will be employed.
  • The obligations of employer and the apprentice or trainee.

It is the foundation for the apprenticeship and traineeship where the parties (the employer and the apprentice or trainee, including the parents or guardian of the apprentice or trainee if they are under 18 years of age) agree on how the relationship will work.

Skills Tasmania’s Conditions of apprenticeships and traineeships in Tasmania outlines employer and employee obligations under the training contract as well as other useful information.

Once the Training Contract has been approved by Skills Tasmania the chosen RTO will contact you and your apprentice/trainee to complete a Training Plan. This describes the formal and workplace training and assessment for the apprentice or trainee. It includes:

  • The vocation, qualification title and qualification level
  • The time frame for each unit of competency to be completed for the qualification
  • The mode of training delivery
  • Any other essential information related to the training your apprentice/trainee will receive.

TasTAFE will maintain support for your apprentice or trainee throughout their training. Once they've completed their training with us, they'll receive an official certificate and transcript, acknowledging that they've completed a nationally recognised qualification with TasTAFE.
