Build the foundations for a rewarding career in mental health peer work, supporting consumers and carers through lived experience
The TASMSS0310 Mental Health Peer Work Skill Set - Essentials is designed for people with lived experience of mental health challenges as either a consumer or carer who want to begin their journey into the mental health peer workforce. This nationally recognised skill set provides the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to work effectively in peer support roles and serves as the first stage of a pathway towards the CHC43515 Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work.
Throughout the course, you will develop an understanding of recovery-oriented practice, trauma-informed care, diversity and inclusion, workplace health and safety, self-care strategies and the unique value of lived experience within mental health services. Learning occurs through a combination of classroom activities, online learning, simulations, role plays and practical scenarios that reflect real workplace situations.
This course is ideal for people with lived experience of mental illness as a consumer or carer who want to explore employment opportunities in the mental health sector or build a foundation for further study in peer work and community services.
Students will gain skills in:
- Working respectfully with diverse people and communities.
- Applying trauma-informed approaches in support settings.
- Supporting consumers and carers through peer work principles and practices.
- Maintaining workplace health and safety.
- Managing personal stressors and maintaining wellbeing in the workplace.
- Understanding the role and value of lived experience in mental health services.
Delivered over 15 weeks, this course combines face-to-face training with online and independent learning to provide a flexible study experience. Learning activities include workshops, classroom sessions, simulated workplace tasks, role plays, online learning through Canvas, and self-directed study and research.
