Build the foundations for a successful career in civil construction

You must be employed in the civil construction industry to undertake this course.

This entry- level course is ideal for new and existing workers in the civil construction industry. It offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen your practical skills and contribute to a safer, more efficient worksite.

In this course, you will gain a wide range of hands-on skills using the tools, equipment and processes commonly found in the civil construction industry. You will learn how to carry out tasks such as manual excavation, concrete work, pothole repair and basic levelling, as well as how to operate small plant and equipment.

The course also covers topics such as identifying underground services, reading and interpreting site plans, and understanding environmental and heritage considerations. You will build your ability to communicate in the workplace, plan and organise tasks, manage risks, and follow WHS procedures - core skills for working safely and productively on-site.

The course is delivered through a combination of on-campus and on-the-job training over a period of 18 months. Off-the-job training is scheduled across seven blocks of three-day sessions. The exact training schedule may vary depending on your selected elective units and will be arranged in consultation with you and your employer.

On successful completion, you will be equipped with nationally recognised skills that support your development as a civil construction worker and help you take the next step in your career. You may choose to continue your studies with further qualifications such as the Certificate IV in Civil Construction Plant Operations (RII40820) or the Certificate IV in Civil Construction Supervision (RII40920), opening up more opportunities for advancement within the industry.

This course is available for new and existing workers within the civil construction industry. The training will be delivered both off and, on the job, so you must have access to a suitable workplace for some of the practical components of the course and be working with an appropriately experienced person.
