Develop your technical skills and knowledge across a range of mediums and art forms, and take the next step towards your career as a visual artist.

This nationally recognised course allows you to extend your existing technical skills and visal arts knowledge across a range of mediums and art forms.

The course will be delivered through a series of themed ‘projects,’ where you will gain hands-on experience in researching concepts, exploring and developing ideas and experimenting with a range of techniques to create your own artwork/s.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to apply a range of broad and integrated technical and theoretical knowledge to your art, and develop your ability to analyse and use information from a range of sources. You’ll also learn how to incorporate a critical approach to the production and presentation of your artwork, and be given time to focus on developing your own unique ‘artistic voice’.

As part of the course, you’ll also have the opportunity to participate in a range of collaborative creative projects where you will learn how to work with others to generate design solutions and how to select and prepare creative work for exhibition.

Our experienced teachers are well-placed to guide you in how to plan your career in the creative arts industry and extend your expertise in your chosen specialist creative field.

On successful completion of this course, you will have developed a broad range of advanced visual arts technical skills and knowledge that reflect current industry practices and are highly valued by employers. You will be well equipped to seek employment in a range of visual arts-related role, begin your own business as a visual artist, or even go on to further study and continue developing your skills through higher education.

Entry Fees, payments and other costs

Your tuition fees cover the basic materials needed for your course, but may not cover items such as text books, workbooks, uniform, online learning resources or personal protective clothing. Depending on your course, there may also be other expenses that you need to budget for.

For this course, you will need to pay for the following items:

$150 for materials used in class that the student retains.

For courses undertaken in 12 months or less, you will be invoiced the full course fee (including any other essential fees associated with your course).

*For courses studied over multiple years, your course and other fees will be split over the years of study, with the concession fee being charged on a yearly basis. At the time of enrolment you will be invoiced for the first year’s fees. An invoice will be raised in each subsequent year around the same time as your ‘enrolment anniversary’.

Recognition of prior learning and skills

Assessment methods

Assessments are designed to help you demonstrate the skills and knowledge you learn in your course and are an essential part of your training. Assessments allow us to confirm that you can perform tasks to the standard required in the workplace, and that you can meet all of the requirements of your course.

While studying at TasTAFE, you may be assessed in a number of different ways. Some common assessment methods include:

completing workplace documents
observations on the job and/or in a simulated assessment environment
quizzes/multiple choice tests
research projects
tests – written or practical
verbal questioning
work samples
written assignments or short answers.

Desirable skills & attributes What you will need

There are different requirements depending on the course you are enrolled in.

Generally, it is recommended that you have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection and up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. TasTAFE has computers available for student use during normal business hours, at all major campuses.

For classes, please be prepared with standard items such as: pens, notebook or paper, USB.

You may also need to bring specific equipment, tools or personal protective equipment, your teacher will let you know.
