Get the skills and knowledge you need to support teachers and students in a range of education settings as a qualified Teacher Assistant.

Teacher Assistants play an important role in supporting schools to meet a variety of student needs for children and young people in kindergarten, primary, and secondary school classes as well as supporting students in Years 11 and 12 at college.

With a qualification in School Based Education Support, you’ll be able to work in kindergartens, primary, secondary schools, and colleges to support students in a variety of different ways. Duties may include general classroom supervision, guiding small group learning, the preparation and implementation of teaching support materials and learning environments, and assisting and participating in activities that enhance the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of schoolchildren. You may also be working with students with a disability or additional needs and be involved in some personal care routines.

This course will equip you with the skills you need to work effectively with students to support their learning, and the opportunity to get hands-on experience through a 100-hour (minimum) work placement in a school environment. You’ll learn how to assist teachers in implementing planned educational programs for students and obtain valuable experience in supporting the development of students’ literacy, numeracy, and oral language skills. You’ll also learn how to support responsible student behaviour and students in need of additional learning support.

The course consists of a practical workshop day and some self-paced online study. A time commitment of the equivalent of three days per week will be required.

Successful completion of this qualification will prepare you for employment as a Teacher Assistant in a school-based setting supporting students from Kindergarten to Year 12, or as a pathway to further study at TasTAFE or university. Related courses include: the 42B Associate Degree Education Support which enables you to work as an Education Support Specialist -ECHC33015 – Certificate III in Individual Support, CHC30113 – Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or a Bachelor of Education degree at university.

This course is also available as a traineeship.
