Start a rewarding career in the Community Services sector.

Our on-campus Certificate II in Community Services (CHC22015) is an entry-level qualification designed for people who are either just starting out in the community services sector or wanting to explore possible career options before committing to higher study. It builds a foundation of skills and knowledge that can support pathways into a range of fields, including early childhood education and care and health services.

The qualification introduces working with people and communities in supportive roles. It builds an understanding of community service values, communication, teamwork, and safe work practices. It will emphasis practical, everyday skills that prepare learners for entry-level roles or further training. It will also help learners test their interest in areas like early childhood and health support services.

We offer two focus areas: community and health.

Community and early learning focus

You will learn how to support a diverse range of individuals by providing a first point of contact. You will also learn how to organise and complete daily work activities, participate in workplace health and safety activities, and how to communicate and work effectively.

You will develop such core skills as communication and interacting with individuals as well as groups, working collaboratively and build confidence in workplace expectations.

The course also delivers learning about key health and safety basics, and an introduction to the awareness of client needs, diversity, and support principals. It will encompass the area of Community services as well as some aspects of early childhood for those interested in both future qualification pathways for community services or early childhood qualifications.

Health Professionals Pathway

Certificate II in Community Services – Health Professionals Pathway is a qualification to guide you into health-related disciplines such as Nursing, Allied Health, Disability, Aged Care & Dental.

The specialised Health Pathway will explore entry level key skills and knowledge relevant to healthcare settings and health related disciplines. Ensuring learners have the basic knowledge and skill to progress towards a career and / or further study in health.

Gain insight from guest speakers across key sectors, including Dental professionals, Allied Health Practitioners, Nursing professionals, Individual Support Workers- ageing and disability specialisations.

On successful completion of this course, you will receive a Certificate II in Community Services.

There are no essential entry requirements for this course.

Fees, payments and other costs

Your tuition fees cover the basic materials needed for your course, but may not cover items such as text books, workbooks, uniform, online learning resources or personal protective clothing. Depending on your course, there may also be other expenses that you need to budget for.

For courses undertaken in 12 months or less, you will be invoiced the full course fee (including any other essential fees associated with your course).

*For courses studied over multiple years, your course and other fees will be split over the years of study, with the concession fee being charged on a yearly basis. At the time of enrolment you will be invoiced for the first year’s fees. An invoice will be raised in each subsequent year around the same time as your ‘enrolment anniversary’.

Recognition of prior learning and skills

It makes sense that you should be recognised for the things you already know how to do.

TasTAFE can assess your skills and knowledge based on your previous education, work history or life experience – which may help you to gain your qualification a whole lot faster!

Assessment methods

Assessments are designed to help you demonstrate the skills and knowledge you learn in your course and are an essential part of your training. Assessments allow us to confirm that you can perform tasks to the standard required in the workplace, and that you can meet all of the requirements of your course.

While studying at TasTAFE, you may be assessed in a number of different ways. Common assessment methods for this course include: written questions, scenarios and performance tasks (projects, work tasks and observations of completing tasks in a simulated environment)

Desirable skills & attributes

The following skills and attributes will be useful to students studying this course:

ability to read, write and understand documents for example; reports, policies, and procedures
ability to listen to others and give full attention, taking time to understand and asking questions as appropriate (active listening)
ability to model appropriate social and non-verbal behaviour
ability to be responsible for others’ health and safety
ability to demonstrate good interpersonal skills and communication skills
ability to work independently or as part of a team.

What you will need

There are different requirements depending on the course you are enrolled in.

Although not required, it is recommended that you have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection. Upon enrolment TasTAFE supply students a Microsoft Office license for the purpose of completing your study; including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Defender (Internet Security). TasTAFE has computers available for student use during normal business hours, at all major campuses.

For classes, please be prepared with standard items such as pens, notebook or paper, USB.

You may also need to bring specific equipment, tools or personal protective equipment, your teacher will let you know.

On successful completion of this course you will receive a CHC22015 - Certificate II in Community Services.
