Take the first steps towards getting started in your Automotive career with this entry-level pre-employment course in Automotive Vocational Preparation, and get the basic skills you need to seek employment within the automotive industry.

The course is ideal if you are looking to begin a career within the Automotive industry – or if you want to get some basic skills and find out what it is like to work as a Mechanic or vehicle body repairer before looking for an apprenticeship.

This course is a pathway to an Australian Apprenticeship.

You can complete one of the following focus areas:

Mechanical

In this course, you will have the opportunity to learn basic skills in vehicle servicing and maintenance. You will also learn how to communicate effectively in an Automotive workplace, follow safe working practices and resolve routine problems, as well as identify automotive electrical systems and components, mechanical systems and components, and how to use and maintain tools and equipment in an automotive workplace.

On successful completion of this course, you will have developed the skills and knowledge you need to perform a range of tasks working with cars and heavy vehicles within an automotive service business. You’ll also have the confidence you need to seek employment as an apprentice or trainee.

Vehicle body

In this course, you will have the opportunity to gain basic skills in vehicle body repair and vehicle painting. You will also learn how to communicate effectively in an Automotive workplace, follow safe working practices, resolve routine problems, as well as identify automotive, mechanical and electrical systems; and how to use and maintain tools and equipment in an automotive workplace.

Basic panel repairs and vehicle painting also feature in this course.

On successful completion of this course, you will have developed the skills and knowledge you need to perform a range of tasks working with vehicles within an automotive body repair business.

Entry

If this course is conducted at a Trade Training Centre (DECYP site), applicants are required to hold a current Registered Working with Vulnerable People (RWVP) card before commencing the course, in accordance with the Department for Education, Children, and Young People’s Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Policy.

Fees, payments and other costs

Your tuition fees cover the basic materials needed for your course, but may not cover items such as text books, workbooks, uniform, online learning resources or personal protective clothing. Depending on your course, there may also be other expenses that you need to budget for.

For courses undertaken in 12 months or less, you will be invoiced the full course fee (including any other essential fees associated with your course).

*For courses studied over multiple years, your course and other fees will be split over the years of study, with the concession fee being charged on a yearly basis. At the time of enrolment you will be invoiced for the first year’s fees. An invoice will be raised in each subsequent year around the same time as your ‘enrolment anniversary’.

Recognition of prior learning and skills

It makes sense that you should be recognised for the things you already know how to do.

TasTAFE can assess your skills and knowledge based on your previous education, work history or life experience – which may help you to gain your qualification a whole lot faster!

Assessment methods

Assessments are designed to help you demonstrate the skills and knowledge you learn in your course and are an essential part of your training. Assessments allow us to confirm that you can perform tasks to the standard required in the workplace, and that you can meet all of the requirements of your course.

While studying at TasTAFE, you may be assessed in a number of different ways. Some common assessment methods include:

completing workplace documents
observations on the job and/or in a simulated assessment environment
quizzes/multiple choice tests
research projects
tests – written or practical
verbal questioning
work samples
written assignments or short answers.

Desirable skills & attributes

The following skills and attributes will be useful to students studying this course:

Follow Occupational Health & Safety practices
Read and understand theory materials
Answer short answer questions
Deal easily with maths (e.g. basic timetables, conversions, volumes, transpositions of formula, use of calculators)
Answer computer testing

What you will need

There are different requirements depending on the course you are enrolled in.

Although not required, it is recommended that you have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection. Upon enrolment TasTAFE supply students a Microsoft Office license for the purpose of completing your study; including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Defender (Internet Security). TasTAFE has computers available for student use during normal business hours, at all major campuses.

For classes, please be prepared with standard items such as pens, notebook or paper, USB.

You may also need to bring specific equipment, tools or personal protective equipment, your teacher will let you know.

On successful completion of this course you will receive a AUR20720 - Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation.
