TasTAFE’s Cyber Security Industry Expert Pilot Program gets underway
Published on: 16 May 2025
TasTAFE’s new Cyber Security Industry Expert Pilot Program officially launched on Friday 9 May at the Cyber Innovation Training Hub at our Campbell Street Campus.
The Program brings volunteer cyber-security experts into TasTAFE to engage with staff and learners through presentations, Q&A sessions, mentoring and co-delivery.
Mapped into a structured schedule, these expert sessions create meaningful engagement between industry and our learners, supporting workforce readiness in cyber security and ICT.
The Program also provides a pathway for industry professionals to explore teaching in the VET sector.
To launch the program and showcase the calibre of speakers involved, our first guest was Steph Burr, Senior Security Researcher at Microsoft.
Across a presentation, Q&A forum and morning tea, Steph provided an insider’s perspective on cyber threat hunting; digital analysis and forensics; incident research, response and reporting; and what it's like working in cyber security at Microsoft.
The session gave real-world context to the unit Analyse and Present Research Information (BSBINS401), that sits within the Certificate IV in Cyber Security (22603VIC).
Daniel Keane, TasTAFE Educational Team Leader – Digital and Business, further highlighted the benefits of the session:
“Our learners actively engaged in Steph's presentation and continued to interact with her and with their peers after the session. It was a great insight into the importance of being able to objectively make assessments, avoid mistakes and prepare and present factual information.”
To date, the Cyber Security Industry Expert Pilot Program has received 19 EOIs from cyber professionals keen to volunteer their expertise across technical, operational and strategic functions.
The program will continue through Semesters 1 and 2 in 2025. TasTAFE learners can register via email or by scanning QR codes on-campus.
