Whilst the buildings at Paterson Street are of a good design, they are dated and no longer fit for purpose. Updating the sites would be extremely costly and never result in a purpose built contemporary learning environment that students deserve.

Nursing, Aged Care and Disability training facilities at Wellington Street have reached capacity. TasTAFE is unable to increase its student numbers in future without significant changes.

Consolidation at Alanvale will also provide significant cost savings for TasTAFE which will be re-invested into Alanvale Campus facilities and equipment.

The move to Alanvale will centralise TasTAFE’s Northern offerings in one refurbished, modern campus, delivering significant cost savings which will be reinvested into Alanvale facilities to benefit students.

This is an exciting redevelopment which will allow TasTAFE to provide students with more state of the art training facilities as well as redeveloped spaces that will enhance the overall on-campus experience for students.

The consolidation at Alanvale will enable students to enjoy interacting with other students from different disciplines and to benefit from accessing the range of services that can only be offered at larger campuses.

Building and other works are taking place at Alanvale Campus in 2020. Work has been planned to minimise disruption to students and staff as much as possible.

The work at Alanvale will include additional car parking to accommodate extra students.

An additional 75 car parking spaces are planned including a new eastern car park and additional parking on the main access road to the campus.

Metro buses operate from the Launceston CBD to Alanvale.

Nursing, Aged Care and Disability students will remain in their existing location on the corner of Wellington and Paterson Streets until the new facilities are ready at Alanvale later in 2020.

In relation to nursing, TasTAFE is still committed to co-locating delivery with the University of Tasmania at Inveresk in the long-term. This will not occur until 2024, so nursing will be re-located to Alanvale.

It is expected that long-term TasTAFE will offer nursing training at both Inveresk and Alanvale. This will allow for both growth and innovative delivery in nursing and increase TasTAFE’s capacity to train more nursing students.

• New fit-for-purpose Nursing, Aged Care and Disability facilities, including new workplace simulation rooms for nursing and aged care training in line with industry best-practice are now complete. Aged Care and Disability courses are currently transitioning to Alanvale. Nursing students can begin using the space once the facilities are signed off by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC)
• New ICT computer labs are now complete.
• An expanded library/learning hub facility for students
• The next stage of the redevelopment will include a new carpark, amenity upgrades and online delivery suites with further redevelopments to follow in 2021

There are no job losses for TasTAFE teachers or support staff under this move – they will all relocate to Alanvale. Most staff have already relocated to Alanvale.

Relocation to Alanvale has been so as to minimise disruption as much as possible. Additional staff parking will be developed as part of the Alanvale redevelopment. Staff are being kept informed as plans progress.

The Client Services function previously located in the Launceston Campus has now moved to Alanvale.

The Drysdale campus is in a modern fit-for-purpose building. Drysdale will remain in its current location in Paterson St, Launceston.

TasTAFE Creative Industries courses will remain co-located with the University of Tasmania at Inveresk and at Alanvale.  (*Please note that Inveresk is currently closed until further notice).

A TasTAFE Client Services function operates at Drysdale (93 Paterson St) as well as at Alanvale Campus (54a Alanvale Rd, Newnham).

There is also a TasTAFE administration area at Inveresk.

TasTAFE will exit its Launceston Campus buildings in Paterson and Wellington Streets by the end of 2020.

Once all moves are finished, the sites will be sold. Given the location and type of property there has already been significant interest in the sale.

TasTAFE has received an advanced loan from the Government, based on repayment from the future sale of properties. This has allowed TasTAFE to get on with the moves and ensure students are offered the best training experience possible. The loan has also allowed for new  Nursing, Aged Care and Disability facilities at Clarence Campus in the south.
