Eight TasTAFE Metals teachers recently had the opportunity undergo training in specialised welding techniques as part of a partnership between the Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council (TMEC) and TasTAFE.

The training, conducted by Weld Australia at TMEC’s Advanced Welder Centre in Burnie, focused on welding according to the latest industry standards and installation and operation of augmented reality welding simulators. The virtual-reality simulators mimic real welding experiences and are compatible with live welding equipment. They provide statistical feedback on weld quality, accuracy and comparative improvements in technique.

The “train the trainer” sessions were an excellent opportunity for teachers to learn the latest techniques using state of the art equipment.

The training was one of a number of initiatives that TasTAFE and TMEC are collaborating on to benefit teachers, students and the wider industry. TMEC and TasTAFE are currently working on an arrangement that would provide relevant TasTAFE students with exposure to the welding simulators.

In addition to the above, TasTAFE is having discussions with TMEC and Skills Tasmania on a project involving the needs of businesses in the maritime sector.
