We were pleased to welcome Speaker of the House of Assembly, Elise Archer, along to our recent Construction and Allied Trades Expo at Clarence Campus where she tried plastering with our teachers Andrew and Warren.

The expo, hosted in partnership with Clennett’s Mitre 10 and industry, provided an opportunity for employers and potential employers of apprentices in the Construction and Allied Trades sector to visit the training facilities to view apprentice training in action. Industry groups including the Master Builders Association, Tasmanian Building and Construction Industry Training Board, Tasmanian Building Group Apprenticeship Scheme, Work and Training and Workskills also supported the event. Several Clennett’s Mitre 10 suppliers also showcased their products.

TasTAFE is preparing the next generation of construction and allied trades workers to take advantage of the current solid growth in the industry. In 2016, about 1350 Construction industry apprentices were enrolled. By May 2017 almost 1400 Construction apprentices were enrolled state-wide. In the Allied Trades area which covers glazing, flooring, plastering, tiling bricklaying and painting, the number of TasTAFE apprentices has grown by 18 per cent in the past five months from 356 in December 2016 to 429 in May 2017.

TasTAFE’s Construction and Allied Trades area provides training across the areas of carpentry and joinery, concreting, painting, plastering, glazing, flooring, bricklaying and tiling.
