Short Course Letterpress Workshop

Introduction to Letterpress Workshops

Interested in the traditional craft of letterpress printing?

Letterpress is a centuries old printing technique that is undergoing a popular resurgence. No modern printing method can match the crisp impression and tactile effect of letterpress type on good quality paper. You will learn how to hand set metal type, cast your own “hot-metal” type on our Ludlow, work with beautiful wooden poster type and try digital letterpress using photopolymer. You will have the chance to work with a variety of beautiful printing presses from the TasTAFE collection including smaller desktop letterpress machines, through to our larger proofing presses and our century old mechanical platen presses.

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of letterpress, but every attendee will also have the opportunity to develop their own ideas. If you’re not sure what you can do with Letterpress, we also have a wealth of inspirational examples of previous work on our waterfront studio walls.

People who have previously attended our letterpress workshops are also most welcome to join us again as always!

Past attendees have produced their own wedding & special occasion invites, business cards, artist books & reproduction prints, flyers and posters and other artwork using our studio.

Attendees will need to provide their own paper (we’ll give you more information on what works best for letterpress on the first evening of the course). Included in the course costs are inks and 1 x A4 photopolymer printing plate (additional plates available at cost price).

Come and learn the craft and beauty of traditional printing.
