Learning Options

The course consists of a combination of lectures, field excursions and practical activities. The course includes a substantial practical component at field sites around Tasmania, including the Mersey, Derwent Estuary and a range of walking at Freycinet and on Mt. Wellington for example.

Assessment

Students’ knowledge and skills are assessed throughout the course. Assessment will consist of a range of methods:

  • Assignments & project work
  • Written and verbal questions
  • Practical exercises
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Scenarios
  • Employability skills
  • Demonstration of activity skills, group management and emergency management skills.

Work Placement
Students will have a formalised work placement as part of their studies. This will involve working in a school environment with the aim:

  • To provide practical experience in teaching/guiding and working with groups
  • To consolidate practical and theory skills
  • To provide sufficient experience for students to enter Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation.

Resources and Equipment

Clothing and Equipment

Students will need to provide the following items of clothing and equipment to participate on field study trips:

  • Warm clothing (thermal underwear, woollen/fleece jumper/jacket, beanie, gloves)
  • Waterproof coat (preferably full length with a hood)*
  • Comforable and sturdy walking shoes/boots
  • Warm sleeping bag*
  • Sleeping mat (4 season)
  • Head torch
  • Wetsuit*
  • 75 Lt+ Rucksack*

* It may be possible to borrow these items from TasTAFE.

Pre-requisites

  • A very good level of physical fitness and ability to participate fully in multi-day bushwalking, rockclimbing and white water rafting activities
  • A strong desire to work in the outdoor recreation/outdoor education industries
  • Completion of relevant training and/or good level of outdoor recreation experience. Examples of sufficient relevant skills and knowledge for entry into the course may include:
    • Completion of a Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation and/or the following subjects in years 11 and 12
      – Outdoor Education TQA2 (Outdoor Recreation or Expedition) and TQA3 Outdoor Leadership
  • Previous experience in the outdoor recreation industry and interest in outdoor pursuits such as day and multi-day bushwalking.

Qualification Requirements

To  gain this qualification successful completion of 24 units is required consisting of 12 core units and 12 electives.
