MEM30205 – Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade specifies the competencies required for employment as an Engineering Tradesperson – Mechanical including the design, assembly, manufacture, installation, modification, testing, fault finding, commissioning, maintenance and service of all mechanical equipment, machinery, fluid power systems, stationary and mobile equipment, instruments and the use of computer controlled machine tools.
This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to work as an Engineering Tradesperson – Mechanical within metal, engineering, manufacturing and associated industries or other industries where Mechanical Tradesperson work is undertaken. The qualification has been specifically developed for apprentices in the above trade. The qualification packaging has been developed on an assumption that competency will be developed through a combination of on and off-the-job learning strategies such as those delivered through a formal apprenticeship. The qualification may also be achieved through formal skills recognition assessment processes.

Once you have gained your trade qualification you could work as a maintenance fitter or machinist for a wide range of companies across Australia.
Employment opportunities vary from being part of a team for a large company to working for a small engineering firm that undertakes different types of work for industrial customers.
You could also work ‘on-site’ in various locations such as shipbuilding yards, large building construction sites or mines in remote locations

This qualification is available year round, as it is delivered in the workplace through an apprenticeship.

*To accommodate those apprentices working a 38 hour week
This qualification is generally delivered over 4 years on and off the job, but may be completed earlier depending on each individual’s experience.
Apprentices attend block release at our Bender Drive Hobart, Alanvale Campus Launceston and Valley Road Campus Devonport dependent on their home region.
Some employers require Day Release training due to the size of their work force or operational requirements. Typically they prefer their employee to attend one day per week instead of block release. This is negotiated with the employer, student and trainer at the time of sign up.
Learners who undertake training on Day Release require an extra time allocation to allow for setting up and packing away each day. Typically, learners on day release will require up to 35 days training per year during their 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of training.
Learners who undertake training on block release require up to 35 days training during their 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of training. Some learners may not need this full allocation of training time due to credit transfers, recognition and individual differences.
4th year students may be allocated up to 15 days training if required. This typically occurs in the North and North West but does not usually occur in the South due to the requirements of our largest employer who does not release students for training in their 4th year.
This course is delivered on campus and in the workplace.
Learners have a combination of on the job/ off the job training. Whilst training on the job they are required to gather evidence of this training using either MyProfiling, testimonials, photographs etc.
Simulated work environment
Students spend a majority of their training time in the simulated work environment at TasTAFE. This environment has been established to reflect current industry standards and practices.
Assessment of the units in this qualification is generally completed at TasTAFE, using evidence from activities conducted during theory and practical classes.

Participants must supply or obtain access to the following resources and equipment:
- combination overalls (cotton)
- steel capped boots
- safety glasses
- pen/biro and pencils
- drawing pack/equipment
- scientific calculator
- writing pad
- Students undertaking welding are also required to supply welding gloves and a welding helmet.

Are there ‘other’ costs?
If My-profiling is being used by the Employer/Apprentice to gather workplace evidence a $50.00 annual fee is payable
Pens, Pencils, Writing Pads, Erasers, Rulers, Set Squares, Compasses, Calculators, Ear plugs and safety glasses are available for purchase from the team administration office in the South, for the other regions supplies can be purchased from local stationary suppliers. Your trainer can advise you on what you need to purchase.

Books can be purchased online or through selected bookshops. TasTAFE may be able to assist with providing information on where to buy the texts if required.
There are no essential entry requirements for this course, however the learner should be engaged as an apprentice under a Training Contract and receiving appropriate structured on-the-job training while undertaking this qualification.

MEM30205 – Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade.
Based on information available from www.training.gov.au the following packaging rules apply for completion of this training product:
- completion of all 12 core units of competency, and
- completion of Group A Fabrication Trade stream units to the value of at least 40 points, and
- completion of units from Group B Certificate III Trade specialisation units listed in Appendix 1, Volume 1 of the Training Package, to bring the total value to at least 73 points
